R U OK? Day — Because Life Happens Every Day
Each year, R U OK? Day reminds us of something simple but powerful — that a genuine conversation can make all the difference. The campaign is built around four small words that hold a lot of meaning: “Are you OK?” It’s a question that might seem ordinary, but for someone doing it tough, it could be the start of something life-changing.
But here’s the thing — life doesn’t just happen on one day in September. The challenges, stresses and unexpected curveballs that people face happen all year round. That’s why it’s important to remember that checking in shouldn’t be reserved for one date on the calendar. Every day is a good day to ask the question, to listen, and to let someone know they’re not alone.
Over the past year, more people across Australia have been making an effort to reach out. Research shows that 90 per cent of people who were asked “Are you OK?” said they felt more supported, grateful and connected afterwards. That’s a huge reminder that even the smallest act of kindness — a quick message, a quiet chat at lunch, or a call on the way home — can make a difference.
The Power of a Simple Question
You don’t need to be a counsellor or have all the answers. You just need to care enough to ask and listen. A conversation can start anywhere — over a coffee, on site, at school pick-up, or even in the car park after work. What matters most is showing that you genuinely care and that you’re ready to listen without judgement.
If you notice someone seems a bit off their game — maybe they’re quieter than usual, distracted, or not joining in like they normally do — that’s your cue to check in. Start with something simple:
“Hey, you don’t seem yourself lately — are you OK?”
And if the answer is “No,” remember that just being there and listening is often the most helpful thing you can do. Encourage them to talk, and if they need extra help, support them in finding it.
Every Day Counts
While R U OK? Day is a great reminder to reach out, the message really lives in the everyday moments. It’s in the quick chats between meetings, the banter over morning tea, or the text that says, “Thinking of you — how’s everything going?” When we check in regularly, we build stronger teams, communities and friendships.
So, let’s make R U OK? Day the start of something ongoing. Let’s keep asking, listening and caring — not just today, but every day. Because one small question, asked with genuine care, can start a conversation that changes a life.
